Across the country

International life isn’t one thing here.

What brought you here shapes what you’re dealing with: the job, the posting, the partner’s contract, the PhD.

Amsterdam

The biggest international crowd in the country, and the tightest housing market. Many internationals here describe a full, fast life with a thin layer of real connection underneath it.

The Hague & Leiden

International organisations, embassies, NGOs and the families that move with them. Contract cycles and postings mean the next move is never far off, which is its own background anxiety.

Rotterdam, Utrecht & Eindhoven

Port, university and tech-campus cities, with a lot of engineers and researchers on international contracts. Demanding work, Dutch directness, and a support system that's mostly back home.

Common patterns

Three patterns common among internationals here.

  • 1. Stress that’s turning into burnout.Long hours, a demanding role, and the sense that you can’t afford to slow down on a contract or a visa. The skills here are about catching the spiral early, not waiting for the crash.
  • 2. Loneliness inside a busy life.Colleagues, sports clubs, borrels, and still nobody who knew you before. The work is building the kind of connection that actually steadies you.
  • 3. The temporary-life feeling.Housing that might not last, a ruling or a contract with an end date, and the “should we stay?” question on a loop. That uncertainty is coachable even when the answer isn’t clear yet.

Coach, or something else?

Which kind of help you actually need.

Skills coaching is for people who are functioning but stretched. In the Netherlands, clinical care runs through your huisarts (GP), who is the usual first step if your anxiety is severe, getting worse, or you think you need more than practical skills. Coaching is not a substitute for that, and Rose will say so plainly on the free call. In het Nederlands: dit is coaching, geen zorg in de zin van de Wkkgz. Rose stelt geen diagnoses en behandelt geen aandoeningen; voor geestelijke gezondheidszorg is je huisarts de eerste stap.

Rose’s path here runs through more than a decade of clinical training and practice — graduate training at Santa Clara University and years inside Dr. David Burns’ TEAM-CBT group at Stanford, the home of the measurement-driven framework.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Is there an English-speaking anxiety coach in Amsterdam?
Yes. Rose Markotic works online with internationals in Amsterdam and across the Netherlands, teaching CBT-based anxiety skills by video in the structured TEAM-CBT form she practised for years in Dr. David Burns' group at Stanford. Sessions are in English. It's coaching, not psychotherapy, and the first 20-minute call is free.
Do I need a huisarts referral?
No. Coaching is booked directly, with no referral and no waiting list. If what you need is clinical care, your huisarts is the right first step, and Rose will tell you if that's the better fit.
Can coaching help with stress and burnout?
Coaching can help when stress is building and you want practical skills to catch the spiral: workload boundaries, worry, sleep that won't settle, the inability to switch off. If you're already unable to work or feel unwell, see your huisarts first. Coaching is not a substitute for clinical care.
What does it cost?
Prices are in euros and posted up front: €180–€220 per 50-min session in a package, or €250 for a single session with no commitment. The 90-minute intake on its own is €396, credited in full toward a package if you continue within 30 days. The Discovery Call is free.
