About
A skills coach who’s done the work herself.
I'm Rose Markotic. If your life looks great on paper but feels tighter than it should — whether that comes from inside, from a move, or from a season of life — I help you build the practical skills to feel steady again.
The story
I’ve done the move. It was harder than it looked.
I’m American, with Croatian roots on my father’s side. I’ve been coming to his country since I was a child; a year ago it became home. Two children, a house on the Adriatic, paperwork in three languages, work across time zones — the shape of a life I didn’t plan and don’t regret.
What I learned the hard way: moving abroad doesn’t fix the anxious mind. It just gives it new things to be anxious about. Visa renewals, friends in three countries, the quiet question of where home is now. The bureaucracy of a place you chose. The grief for the life you didn’t take.
I spent years training in anxiety and emotion-regulation skills before coaching was my work — including years inside Dr. David Burns’ TEAM-CBT group at Stanford. Training with clinical depth. Coaching is not a licensed practice, and I hold that line: no diagnosis, no treatment. What crosses over is the skills themselves, taught directly. Tools you keep. The practice, not the theory.
The move is my story, not an entry requirement. Across more than a decade of that work, most of the anxious minds I’ve sat with never changed countries — the same patterns ride on a job, a decision, a body, a season of life. The skills don’t care what the anxiety is attached to.
And the practice keeps growing with my own life. The newest specialty — women’s midlife and wellness — isn’t a market decision. I’m in that season myself: the mood weather, the 3am wake-ups, the identity renegotiation nobody briefs you on. I bring the same professional training to it that I bring to the anxiety work, plus the one thing training can’t give — being unsurprised by any of it.

Where the skills come from.

Rose’s path to coaching runs through more than a decade of clinical training and practice. She completed her graduate training at Santa Clara University and spent years inside Dr. David Burns’ TEAM-CBT group at Stanford — training in the structured, measurement-driven framework alongside the group that developed it — working throughout with anxiety, mood, and life transitions.
Today she brings that depth to coaching: evidence-based cognitive and behavioral methods, taught as practical skills you keep. Coaching is not psychotherapy or medical care, and Rose holds that line carefully. If what you’re facing calls for therapy or medical support, she’ll tell you directly and help you find the right care.
My background includes clinical training as a US-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. The coaching services offered here are non-clinical; they are not therapy, and I do not provide therapy through this practice. Coaching is offered only to clients located in jurisdictions where I do not hold a clinical license — outside the five US states (California, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont) where my separate licensed therapy practice operates.
If you’re in one of those five states, my therapy practice at getbetterthoughts.com is the right fit, not this one.

The approach
Skills, not stories.
Most coaching wants you to identify your values, set goals, and run at them harder. Most therapy wants you to understand where the anxiety came from. Neither is wrong — they’re just answering a different question than the one you need answered this Wednesday.
What I do is closer to a structured curriculum. Specific skills, practiced in order: emotion regulation, cognitive reframing, somatic awareness, decision-making under uncertainty, communication for hard moments. One or two tools per session. You leave with something concrete to practice — not insight to mull over.
One thing to know going in: there’s homework. Every session ends with a written practice plan, because the change happens between sessions — in your actual week, not in the hour with me — and that’s what makes weeks enough. The session teaches the skill and corrects the practice; the doing is yours.
By the end of a package, the goal is that you can do this without me. The work is portable.
What I believe
Steadiness isn’t a personality trait. It’s a set of skills — and skills can be learned.
What this isn’t
Coaching, with edges.
I’m direct about what this work is for, and what it isn’t:
- —It’s coaching, not psychotherapy. If you need clinical care for a mental health condition, that’s a different kind of professional and I’ll tell you so on the Discovery Call.
- —It’s skills-based, not insight-based. You won’t leave with a deeper understanding of your childhood. You’ll leave with a notebook of practices that work.
- —It’s bounded. Packages are fixed-scope, not open-ended. When the package is done, the work is done — or you can take the next size up. No drip-of-sessions-forever model.
Frequently asked
Common questions
- What is anxiety skills coaching?
- A structured, skills-based coaching approach focused on teaching practical tools for emotion regulation, cognitive reframing, somatic awareness, and decision-making under uncertainty. Each session builds capacity you keep. The output is skills, not insight.
- How is this different from therapy?
- Therapy is a regulated clinical service that diagnoses and treats mental health conditions, delivered by a licensed clinician within their state of license. Coaching is non-clinical skills education — practical tools for managing day-to-day stressors and life transitions. I am not providing psychotherapy, counseling, diagnosis, or medical care through this practice. If you need clinical care, I will refer you to a licensed clinician in your jurisdiction.
- What happens in a session?
- Every package starts with a 90-minute intake session — we review your intake questionnaire together and turn it into goals and a plan. After that, each 50-minute session has structure: a brief check-in on what you practiced since last time, one or two specific skills introduced or refined, and a clear plan for what to practice before the next session. Sessions happen by secure video. You leave with a written summary of the skills and practice plan.
- Who do you work with?
- English-speaking expats across Southern Europe, US professionals in Central and Eastern time zones (private-pay, with sessions in their US morning), women in the midlife season wherever they live, and English-speaking locals in Croatia. I’m based in Croatia, which lets me serve US mornings and EU afternoons in one workday. The who-I-work-with page has the full picture →
- What does it cost?
- Sessions are €122–€150 per 50-min session in a package. Packages run from €720 (Reset, 4 sessions) to €1,800 (Transform, 14 sessions) — the posted price is what you pay. Payment plans available on every package. See the pricing page for details.
